Politics is a noble profession. Really? Yes and no – Yes for all those politicians who dedicated their adult lives for the good of others. They exercised means within their control to pursue causes and enacted processes through laws to help the populous. To this group of politicians, it does not matter how many by numbers were helped but help for others is what counted. They exemplified the thick skin needed to deflect critics and naysayers. They thrive on building bridges rather than tearing them down. Critically at times they sacrificed their own beliefs to accede to a majority beliefs. To them it did not matter whether they were head of the line or somewhere in the back rejoicing accolades. Rare as it sounds but for every generation there are true politicians for the people and by the people. The Yes generation of politicians.
And there is No generation of politicians in abundance. Clues in locating them? Number one - their material wealth skyrockets after being elected to be politicians. Wealth increases far more than their meager compensation. To this cadre being in politics is akin to planting a money tree in the backyard, shake every time you need and the dollar bills fall out – a secured wealth pipeline. They are easy to spot. Just look at their legislative accomplishment – far and very few in between. They mold themselves in objecting to everything without any basis unless on the leash by the leaders. They invent and megaphone unfounded theories, conspiracy and fact lacking statements to remain in news cycles. On fact checking alone they always earn multiple Pinocchio.
REAL DEAL
I looked at two politicians to outline Real Deal Politicians [RDP]. Both are gone but never to be forgotten. One came from well endowed Boston Irish Clan and other from Southern Cotton Picker Clan. Both rose above the crowd for accomplishments in politics through a widely different route. The Bostonian developed bridges as deal maker to the point when approached by him others relented simply because Bostonian had done all the leg work necessary and simply had bipartisan support. Even presidents sought out his support. His presence, political acumen and relationship afforded him successes to the envy of his critics. The Southerner needed to fight to establish himself. He picked people issues from rights to safety nets. He worked on garnering public support speaking like one of them. He pursued, pressured, cajoled, worked hard to gain support and earned the admiration of populous. His persistence did not pay off all the time but each rejection made him comeback stronger. These two really exemplify Real Deal Politicians.
PINOCCHIOS
There are too many candidates to choose from in Pinocchio Politicians [PP]. But two of them stand out because they both are turn coats. Their belief and issue support changes on a dime based on how the political wind is blowing. Like False Prophets they espouse faulty doctrines to gain media megaphone and be a part of news cycle. Blaming others for every ill and litigate/investigate issues long past dead and forgotten has become their modus operandi. Indulging in frivolous lawsuits using campaign cash is another dart in their arsenal of nothing burger. Given a chance they will have a select committee to investigate in 2021 the Lincoln assassination. Each of them claims to be conservative but have never presented any meaningful legislation for the benefits of constituents they represent. Their dude worship and brown nosing have become legendary erasing any positive legacy which history may write. The first renegade is a southern gentleman and the other from far out west. Two really exemplify the Pinocchio Politicians.
This outline is just a narration and observations. From the beginning of the times there are RDPs and PPs. This is not likely to change. Just a hope the mix balance of RDP and PP continues to improve and vote casting populous get higher return of their investments. Next time you vote, ask the candidates to determine if they plan to become RDP or PP. Cast your vote making a reasonable prediction of future behavior of who you are electing. Well it is just politics.
